1908 मध्ये इराणमध्ये तेलाचा शोध लागला. सुरुवातीचे अनेक वर्ष त्यावर ब्रिटीशांचाच ताबा राहिला. 1951 मध्ये मोहम्मद मोसादेघच्या नेतृत्वातील सरकारने तेलाचे राष्ट्रीयकरण केले. परिणाम? CIA ने इराणमध्ये अंतर्गत संघर्ष घडवून हे सरकार पाडले आणि पुढची 28 वर्षे मोहम्मद रझा शाह पहलवी या अमेरिकाधार्जीन्या नेत्याच्या हातात इराणची कमान राहिली. केवळ ब्रिटिश आणि अमेरिकन नव्हे, तर सोविएत संघाने सुद्धा एकदा ऐन दुसऱ्या महायुद्धात 1941 मध्ये इराणवर ब्रिटिशांसोबत आक्रमण करून उत्तरीय इराणवर कब्जा केलेला. दुसऱ्या महायुद्धानंतर ब्रिटिशांनी इराणमधलं सैन्य काढलं मात्र स्टालिन सोविएत सैन्य काढण्यास तयार नव्हता. संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघाने ठराव संमत करून स्टालिनवर दबाव आणला आणि सैन्य काढण्यास प्रवृत्त केलं.
साधारण 1979 पर्यंत या पहलवीचं सरकार होतं. 1979 मध्ये झालेल्या इस्लामिक क्रांतीमध्ये आयातुल्ला खोमेनीचं जी एकहाती सत्ता आली ती आजतागायत सुरूच आहे. हे सरकार कटाक्षाने अमेरिका विरोधी आहे आणि त्यामुळेच अमेरिकेचा भारतावर सातत्याने इराणकडून तेल खरेदी न करण्याबद्दल दबाव राहिला. आधीच्या अनेक भारतीय सरकारांनी हा दबाव झुगारला मात्र 2018 पासून भारताने इराणकडून होणारी तेल खरेदी कमी केली. यावर अमेरिकेने कितीही उर बडवला की भारत आमच्या दबावात आला, तरी भारताने इराणचे तेल कमी करून रशिया कडून खरेदी वाढवली हे तथ्य पुरेसे आहे भारत दबावात नाही आला हे सिद्ध करण्यासाठी.
इराणचं अस्तित्व प्रामुख्याने अमेरिका व इस्राएलच्या डोळ्यात खुपतं. जिथं योम कीप्पुर युद्धामध्ये सहा दिवसांत सहा अरबी देशांना धूळ चारणारा इस्राएल ग्रेटर इस्रायलचे स्वप्न साकार करत होता, जिथं अमेरिका संपूर्ण पश्चिम आशियावर ताबा ठेवून होता, तिथं एकमेव इराण होता जो या महत्वाकांक्षेला अडसर बनून राहिला होता. इराणदेखील काही धुतल्या तांदळातला नाही. गाझा पट्टीमध्ये हमास दहशतवाद्यांना उभं करून इस्रायलच्या महिलांवर अत्याचार करण्याचं पाप इराणच्या माथी आहेच. भारताला याच्याशी देणंघेणं नाही. जो देश भारताच्या हिताचा नाही तो भारताचा शत्रू हे साधं सूत्र आहे. इस्राएल कडून आधुनिक शस्त्रांचं तंत्रज्ञान मिळतं म्हणून तोही मित्र, इराणकडून तेल मिळतं म्हणून तोही मित्र. बाजू घेण्याची भूमिका भारताची कधीच राहिली नाही.
आज सुरू असलेलं इराण वि. अमेरिका आणि इस्राएल युद्ध गेल्या महिनाभरापासून अमेरिकेला जड जातंय. मुळात दुसऱ्या देशाच्या भूमीवर जाऊन मात्रागमन करण्याचे प्रकार अमेरिकेचे नवीन नाहीत मात्र यावेळी अमेरिका इराणच्या नव्हे, तर चीन आणि रशियाच्या जाळ्यात अडकला आहे. चीन व रशियाने सावधपणे इराणला प्याद्यासारखं उभं केलंय. हवी ती सगळी मदत इराणला याच दोन देशांकडून होतेय हे स्पष्ट आहे. इकडे अमेरिकी लष्कराची जास्तीत जास्त ताकद मात्र विनाकारण खर्ची पडतेय. काही लाखात बनवलेले इराणी ड्रोन शेकडो कोटींची अमेरिकी शस्त्रास्त्रे निकामी करतोय. उद्या अमेरिका इराणच्या जमिनीवर सैन्य उतरवेल पण असच सैन्य व्हिएतनाम आणि अफगाणिस्तानात सुद्धा उतरवलं होतच की अमेरिकेने. सर्वार्थाने अमेरिकेची सर्व शक्ती अशा एका देशाला संपवण्यात खर्च होतेय जो खरं पाहता अमेरिकेच्या शक्तीपुढे फारसा टिकू शकत नाही, पण तो नुकसान मात्र पुरेपूर करतोय. रामायणाचा संदर्भ इथं आवर्जून द्यावा वाटेल. अमेरिका अहंकाराने माजलेला रावण आहे आणि इराण म्हणजे वानर राज बाली. बालीने आक्रमण करून आलेल्या रावणाला बगलेत धरून तिन्ही लोकी मिरवलं. शेवटी रावणाला बालीचं सामर्थ्य कळलं आणि त्याने हार मानली. इराणदेखील हरणार नाही, जिंकणार तर त्याहून नाही, पण अमेरिकेची अशीच नाचक्की करत राहणार.

‘होस्पेट‘ हे तुंगभद्रा नदीच्या काठावर वसलेलं, ऐतिहासिक महत्व लाभलेलं, आणि युनेस्कोच्या जागतिक वारसास्थळाच्या यादीत असणाऱ्या हम्पीचे प्रवेशद्वार म्हणुन ओळखल्या जाणाऱ्या एका छान ,स्वच्छ आणि टुमदार शहरात, जिथे गर्दी,गडबड याचा लवलेश नाही, अशा शहरातून वाट काढत आमची स्वारी निघाली रेल्वेस्टेशन जवळील ‘Hotel Hampi International’ कडे.
स्वच्छ,सुनियोजित असं ते हॉटेल पाहून आमचा पुणे ते हम्पी हा तब्बल १२ तासांच्या प्रवासाचा क्षीण कुठल्या कुठे नाहीसा झाला. भरपेट नाश्ता झाला आणि वेध लागले हम्पी सफरीचे. आम्ही हंम्पी ची सफर निसर्गाची मजा घेत बाईक रेंट वर घेऊन करायचे ठरवले आणि तो आमचा सर्वात बेस्ट निर्णय ठरला . पहिल्या दिवशी आम्ही हॉटेल मधून निवांत बाहेर पडलो आणि हंपीचे नैसर्गिक सौंदर्य पाहुन डोळ्यांचे पारणे फिटले,चहूकडे नजर जाईल तिकडे उंच उंच नारळाची झाडे आणि डोळ्यांना सुखावणारी हिरवीगार भाताची शेते….. असे वाटत होते जणु “हिरवे हिरवे गार गालीचे, हरित तृणांच्या मखमालीचे “या बालकवींच्या ओळी त्यांना इथेच स्फुरल्या असाव्यात. भात आणि केळी च्या शेतांमधुन वाट काढत, रस्ता शोधत शोधत आम्ही पोहोचलो ‘सानापूर लेक’ला. तिथे अगदी नीरव शांतता अनुभवायला मिळाली कसलीच गर्दी नाही की गोंगाट नाही. सानापुर लेक चे आणखीन एक वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे ‘कोरॅकल राईङ’ म्हणजेच बांबू च्या काड्यांपासुन बनवलेल्या या छोट्याशा नावा, ज्याला पूर्वी आपल्याकडे कढई असे म्हणत. तिकडे बराच वेळ घालवुन आम्ही निघालो ‘पंपा सरोवर’ ला, असे म्हणतात की याच पंपा सरोवर काठी श्रीराम भक्त ‘शबरी’ ने राम लक्ष्मण यांना उष्टी बोरे खाण्यास दिली आणि अशी ही आख्यायिका आहे की ‘पंपा’ म्हणजेच पार्वतीने महादेवाशी आपले लग्न व्हावे म्हणुन तपश्चर्या केली. समोरच विष्णू-लक्ष्मी चे मंदिर आहे. आम्ही रात्री हॉटेल वरती परतलो, रात्रीच्या जेवणाचा आस्वाद घेतला आणि झोपी गेलो.

दुसऱ्या दिवशी आम्ही लवकरच निघायचे ठरवले ,अगदी सकाळी आठ वाजताच हॉटेलच्या बाहेर पडलो. हाताशी होता फक्त हंपी चा नकाशा आणि गुगल मॅप. आम्ही आज साऊथ हंपी फिरणार होतो. आधी निघालो “विरूपाक्ष” मंदिराकडे.
मंदिराकडे जाण्याचा रस्त्यातच हेमकुंट टेकडीच्या उताराशी अतिशय सुंदर असे उंच कोरीव काम केलेल्या खांबांचा शामियाना आणि आत एक अखंड दगडात बनवलेली अवाढव्य अशी गणपती ची मूर्ती, म्हणजेच त्याच प्रसिद्ध कडलेकाळू गणेशाचे दर्शन घेतले. कन्नड मध्ये कडलेकाळू म्हणजे चण्या सारखा आकार. मूर्तीच्या पोटाचा आकार चण्यासारखा असल्याने हे नाव पडले. समोर हेमकुंट टेकडीचे मनोहारी दृश्य पाहुन फोटो काढण्याचा मोह काही आवरला नाही. भरपुर फोटो काढुन आम्ही निघालो विरूपाक्ष मंदिराकडे. विरुपाक्ष मंदिराची मुळं सातव्या शतकातील आहेत. याचा विस्तार मात्र 15 व्या शतकात विजयनगर साम्राज्यात झाला. विरूपाक्ष मंदिराच्या प्रवेशद्वाराजवळच एक नितळ पाण्याचे कुंड आहे, ज्याला “पुष्करिणी” म्हणतात.विरूपाक्ष मंदिर हे द्राविडियन शैली च्या शिल्पकलेचा एक उत्तम नमुना आहे. ९ मजली ‘गोपुरम’ हे ही तेथील मुख्य आकर्षण. त्या नंतर आम्ही पाहिला “उग्र नृसिंह” अगदी नावाप्रमाणे मोठाले एकदम बाहेर आलेले डोळे, आणि नागांच्या वेटोळ्यावर विराजमान नरसिंहाची विशाल मूर्ती आणि डोक्यावर नागांनी धरलेला फणा,कल्पकता आणि सृजनशीलतेला अनोखा संगम. तिथेच अगदी बाजूला आहे ते “बदावी लिंगम” म्हणजेच महादेवाची विशाल पिंड, आणि तिथला आजूबाजूचा निसर्ग पण खूप सुंदर होता.

मग आमची स्वारी निघाली “विजय विठ्ठल” मंदिराकडे ज्याच्याबद्दल आम्ही बरंच ऐकलं होतं आणि पाहण्याची बरीच उत्सुकता होती.मंदिराच्या प्रांगणात प्रवेश केल्यानंतर दृष्टीस पडतं ते ‘stone chariot’ जे खरेतर मंदिराचे मुख्य आकर्षण आहे.ते भारतातील 3 stone chariot पैकी एक आहे आणि मंदिरातील दुसरं आकर्षण म्हणजे रंग मंडपम जे प्रसिद्ध आहे तिथल्या 56 संगीतमय खांबांसाठी. त्या खांबांवरती हलक्या हाताने स्पर्श केल्यानंतर त्यामधून संगीताचे सूर ऐकू येतात, परंतु काही वर्षांपासून सरकारकडून त्या खांबांना स्पर्श करण्यास मनाई करण्यात आली आहे, जेणेकरून त्या वास्तू ची वाताहत होणार नाही. विजय विठ्ठल मंदिराचे स्थापत्य हे “द्राविडीयन शैली” मध्ये केलेलं
आहे. कल्पकता आणि सृजनशीलता यांचा अनोखा संगम इथे पहायला मिळाला. आता झाला विठोबा मग पोटोबाचं काय…..आम्ही बाहेर येऊन तिकडेच थोडेफार खाल्ले आणि निघालो पुढच्या भ्रमंती साठी. हंपी मध्ये फिरताना एक महत्त्वाची गोष्ट म्हणजे आजूबाजूच्या सुंदर निसर्गामुळे थकवा अजिबात जाणवत नाही, उलट रस्ता कधी संपूच नये असं वाटत.आता आम्ही निघालो “Lotus Mahal ” पहायला. लोटस महाल चे वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे त्याच्या छताचा आकार हा कमळाच्या पाकळ्यांसारखा आहे. महाल दोन मजली असून तो राजांनी मनोरंजनासाठी बांधलेला आहे. तिकडून जवळच आहे ते “Elephant stable’ म्हणजेच विजयनगर साम्राज्यातील राज हत्तींसाठी बांधलेला पागा. भलीमोठी आयताकृती आकाराची लांब वास्तू आहे. या वास्तू मध्ये 11 विशाल घुमटाकार खोल्या आहेत. एका खोली मध्ये एक वेळी 2 हत्ती बसतील एवढी ती मोठी होती.

तिथले जवळच असलेले काही आणखी प्रेक्षणीय स्थळं पाहून आम्ही निघालो अंजनाद्री टेकडीच्या दिशेने, जिला स्थानिक लोक अन्नेगिरी असे देखील म्हणतात. मूळ वाल्मिकी रामायणातच असा उल्लेख आहे की हनुमानाचा जन्म माता अंजनी च्या पोटी याच अंजनाद्री पर्वतावर झाला. आजघडीला आपल्याला दिसते ती एक छोटीशी टेकडी, जिच्या ५७५ पायऱ्या सर करून आम्ही “जय श्रीराम” चा जयघोष करत वरती पोहोचलो. खूप दमलो होतो, परंतु वरतून अगदी विहंगम दृश्य पहायला मिळालं. प्रभू श्रीरामचंद्रांच्या पदस्पर्शाने आणि महाबली मारुतीरायाच्या वास्तव्याने पावन झालेली कोणे एके काळची हीच का ती किष्किंधा नगरी जिचे आता फक्त अवशेष च उरले आहेत या विचाराने सद्गदित होऊन हनुमानाचे दर्शन घेतले आणि हनुमान स्तोत्र म्हणत आम्ही परत खाली उतरलो. एव्हाना खूप अंधार पडला आणि आम्ही वाऱ्याच्या वेगाने हॉटेल वरती पोहोचलो. तर अशी झाली आमची कुठलंही पुर्व नियोजन नसलेली, छोटेखानी अशी ‘हम्पी ट्रिप’ but unplanned trips are always the best, नाही का?

केवळ इन्स्टावर ट्रेडिंग आहे, फोटो चांगले येतात किंवा दहा जण जाऊन आले म्हणून नव्हे, तर हंपीला जायचं ते त्या साम्राज्याचे जिवंत जागते पुरावे बघण्यासाठी ज्या साम्राज्याने छत्रपती शिवरायांच्या जन्माच्या अगोदरची जवळजवळ तीनशे वर्ष भारतात परदेशी आक्रमकांच्या नाकावर टिच्चून भारतीय संस्कृती जिवंत ठेवली. आक्रमकांनी हम्पीवर हल्ला करून कित्येक महिने प्रयत्न केले तरी सुद्धा अस्तित्व पूर्णपणे संपवू नाही शकले. हंपी केवळ एक टुरिस्ट डेस्टिनेशन नाहीये, हंपी आठवण आहे आक्रमणाची, त्याविरोधात दिलेल्या लढ्याची आणि भारतीय संस्कृतीच्या समृद्धतेची. जेव्हा एकीकडे बाबर अयोध्येतलं राम मंदिर तोडत होता, तेव्हा इकडे विजयनगर हे जगातलं दुसरं सर्वात श्रीमंत राज्य म्हणून उभारीस आलं होतं. हंपीला जायचं ते बाबराच्या आठवणी पुसून कृष्णदेवरायाच्या जाग्या करण्यासाठी

युद्ध, राजकारण, जादूटोणा, घराणी, सैतान, ड्रॅगन वगैरेंवर आधारित अमेरिकन मालिका गेम ऑफ थ्रोन्स मध्ये एक घराणे असते, लॅनिस्टर घराणे. हे त्या साम्राज्यातील सर्वात श्रीमंत व बलाढ्य घराणे असते. टायविन लॅनिस्टर या अतिशय धूर्त, क्रूर व तितक्याच चाणाक्ष असलेल्या व्यक्तीने सिंहासनावर न बसता सिंहासनाच्या दोऱ्या स्वतःच्या हातात ठेवलेल्या असतात. या टायविनचा नावडता मुलगा म्हणजे टिरियन. राजकारणात अतिशय हुशार, लोकांना एका नजरेत ओळखणारा, पाहिजे तिथे वाकड्यात शिरणारा, चांगल्याशी चांगला, वाईटाशी वाईट, कमालीची विनोदबुद्धी आणि हजरजबाबीपणा असणारा असा हा टिरियन केवळ मनोरंजकच नव्हे, तर हवाहवासा वाटायचा. त्याच्या असण्याने कथेतल्या गोष्टी ठीक होतील, गोंधळ दूर होईल असे वाटायचे. महाराष्ट्राचे राजकारण या गेम ऑफ थ्रोन्स पेक्षा फारसे वेगळे नाही, विशेषतः 2019 नंतरच्या घडामोडी पाहता गेम ऑफ थ्रोन्स फिकेच पडेल एवढे आपले मराठी राजकारण रंजक आहे, आणि या राजकारणातील टिरीयन लॅनिस्टर होते आपले अजितदादा पवार. 28 जानेवारी 2026 रोजी विमान अपघातात अचानक त्यांचं निधन झालं आणि मग महाराष्ट्राला जाणवलं, की अजितदादांचं अस्तित्व किती महत्त्वाचं होतं. 41 आमदार, सहा वेळा उपमुख्यमंत्री, तीन दशकांची सत्ता हे सर्व मोजमाप करण्याचं साधन. प्रत्यक्षात दादांची खरी ओळख हीच, की दादा प्रॅक्टिकल होते. उगाच विचारधारेच्या नावाने गळा काढणं नाही किंवा अमुक एक वर्ग पीडित आहे म्हणून त्यांच्या नावाने मतं मागणं नाही. अजितदादांनी त्यांचं राजकारण बऱ्यापैकी सरळसोट ठेवलं. त्यामुळेच, राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेस पक्ष, की ज्या पक्षाचा अगदी सुरुवातीपासून जातीय भेदाभेद करण्याचा, जातीय विषपेरणीला खतपाणी घालण्याचा इतिहास राहिलेला आहे, त्यात असूनही अजितदादांनी एकदाही जातीय तेढ निर्माण होईल अशी ना भूमिका घेतली, ना काही तसे वक्तव्य केले. यामागचे एकमेव कारणच हे, की दादा याबाबतीत प्रामाणिक होते. ते जे नाहीत, ते असल्याचा आव त्यांनी आणला नाही. सध्या देशात जसजशी हिंदुत्वाची घडी मजबूत होतेय, तसे आपण अनेकजणांना भगव्या रंगात अचानक रंगलेले बघतोय. काँग्रेसच्या काळात हेच लोक गांधी – नेहरूंच्या नावे भूपाळ्या गात असत. असा रंग अजितदादांनी कधीही बदलला नाही. त्यांची ओळख नेहमी कामावरून राहिली, आणि हेच त्यांचे यश होते.
राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेस पक्ष स्थापन केला शरद पवारांनी मात्र त्याची खरी ताकद अजितदादाच होते, हे ठामपणे तेव्हा सिद्ध झालं जेव्हा 2023 मधलं दादांचं बंड कोर्टात टिकलं, घड्याळाचं चिन्ह सुद्धा दादांच्या गटाला मिळालं आणि त्यानंतरच्या काळात दादांनी राष्ट्रवादी सुद्धा, आणि स्वतःची प्रतिमा सुद्धा, अधिक बळकट करून दाखवली. ती इतकी, की कालच्या त्यांच्या निधनानंतर आजन्म भाजप समर्थक असणारे आणि एकेकाळी त्यांचा कट्टर विरोध करणारे सर्वच जण नुसते हळहळले नाहीत, तर त्यांनाही जाणवलं की अजितदादांना फडणवीसांनी का सोबत घेतलं होतं ते.

पवार घराणे हे महाराष्ट्राचे लॅनिस्टर घराणे. निर्विवादपणे सर्वात श्रीमंत, ताकदवर आणि सर्वाधिक काळ सत्तेत असणारे हे घराणे. शरद पवार बऱ्यापैकी टायविन लॅनिस्टर सारखेच आहेत. सत्तेत राहणं त्यांना नेहमी जमलं. उगीचच मोठमोठ्या लढाया करून ताकद वाया न घालवता राजकीय डावपेच, अदलाबदली, एक सांगून एक करणे या गोष्टींमार्फत त्यांनी नेहमी सत्ता कायम ठेवली. इंदिरा, राजीव आणि सोनिया गांधीना नडायला ते घाबरले नाहीत, आणि भाजपला सुद्धा मागच्या दाराने झुलवत ठेवून नेहमी पर्याय खुले ठेवले. अजितदादांना भाजपच्या सोबत जाण्यामागचे राजकीय गणित शरद पवारांपेक्षा जास्त चांगले समजले. जे शरद पवारांनी 1999 मध्ये वाजपेयींसोबत जाऊन करायला हवे होते, किंवा 2014 किंवा 2019 मध्ये मोदींसोबत यायला हवे होते, ते अजितदादांना 2023 मध्ये कळले, आणि त्यांनी भाजपची साथ धरली. सध्याच्या घडीला स्थिर सरकार कोण देऊ शकतं याचं आकलन दादांना साहेबांपेक्षा चांगलं जमलं, हे खरं पाहता दोन्ही काका – पुतण्यांचं यश. मागे कुणीतरी म्हणलेलं, की राष्ट्रवादी फुटल्यामुळे जास्त वाढली. एकसंध राष्ट्रवादीमध्ये जेवढे आमदार खासदार होते, आज त्यापेक्षा जास्त दोन्ही राष्ट्रवादीत मिळून आहेत.

मागच्या पाच वर्षात दोन पक्षांचं विभाजन झालं. पैकी एक, शिवसेना, हा असा पक्ष की आज स्पष्टपणे एकनाथ शिंदे आणि उद्धव ठाकरेंमध्ये आपण टोकाची कटुता बघू शकतो. ही कटुता अजितदादांनी शरद पवारांच्या बाबतीत येऊ दिली नाही. उलटपक्षी, निधनाच्या काही दिवस आधीपर्यंत आपण ही बातमी ऐकत होतो की आता दोन्ही राष्ट्रवादी एकत्र येणार. दादांच्या दुःखद निधनाच्या वेळी पवार कुटुंबाची जी एकी आपण सर्वांनी पाहिली, महाराष्ट्रातील सर्वच कुटुंब तेवढ्याच एकीने रहावेत अशी देवाचरणी प्रार्थना.

अजितदादांनी विकास देखील केलाच. किंबहुना, दादाच एकमेव असे व्यक्तिमत्व म्हणावे की राष्ट्रवादीत असून देखील विकास केला. पिंपरी चिंचवड, बारामती, हिंजवडी मधील औद्योगिकीकरण असो किंवा ग्रामीण भागातील साखर कारखाने, दादांच्या कृपेनं बऱ्याच जणांचे खिसे भरले, घरं चालली आणि सुबत्ता देखील आली.
कोरोना काळात जिथे उद्धव ठाकरेंसारखे निष्क्रिय मुख्यमंत्री केवळ फेसबुकवर लाईव्ह येऊन गप्पा मारीत होते, तिथे अजितदादा मंत्रालयात आठ वाजता हजर राहत. त्यावेळी त्यांच्या कामाचं क्रेडिट उद्धव ठाकरे घेऊन गेले मात्र दादांनी तोंडातून चकार शब्द काढला नाही. काम करत राहिले, आणि कामाने दाखवून दिलं. आज उद्धव ठाकरे वीस आमदार आणू शकले, तर बंड करून देखील दादांनी 2024 च्या विधानसभेत 51 जागा लढवून 41 आमदार निवडून आणले.

India’s GDP stands at $4.19 trillion as of April 2025, according to the International Monetary Fund. Growing at a steady pace of 6.2%, it’s expected to retain its position as the fastest-growing major economy this year. With this trajectory, India is set to surpass Japan and become the 4th largest economy, and if this growth rate sustains, the 3rd largest isn’t far off either.

It’s been a long journey, from being the 10th largest economy in 2014 to knocking on the door of the top 3 in 2025. A lot has changed. Infrastructure has improved. GDP growth has been consistent and impressive. But as always, the devil lies in the details.

No, the issue isn’t about per capita GDP or income, it can be a misleading parameter for literally the most populous country in the world. There are simpler, more visible indicators that reflect the actual economic strength of a nation. Let’s take public transport, for instance,specifically, railways. On one side, we have semi-high-speed trains like Vande Bharat and Namo Bharat (Delhi-Meerut RRTS), metro rail expanding in over 25 cities, and stations getting a long-overdue facelift. But on the other hand, we still struggle with something as basic as train frequency. No data is needed, just try booking a Tatkal ticket and watch the waiting list climb. Long-distance travellers are often inconvenienced by local commuters boarding mid-journey, a problem worsened by the lack of dedicated local trains in many regions.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, our flagship high-speed rail project, won’t be operational until 2030. Meanwhile, China already boasts over 45,000 km of high-speed rail. So yes, India might soon be the third-largest economy, but in terms of development parity, we still trail significantly, especially behind China. Public transport is a powerful indicator of real development. It shows how easily people can commute, how much time and fuel is saved, how economic opportunities spread. It minimizes disparity and brings people together. India’s issue is not only the pace of development, it is also about the false sense of accomplishment for smaller milestones.

Defence and space? Those are areas where we’re faring much better. India has demonstrated its military strength decisively in the recent conflict with Pakistan. Our air superiority and air defence are literally one sided, and moreover we can own the enemy in a few hours if we decide. It was all visible during the conflict. In space, we may still be behind the U.S. Russia, and China, but we lead much of the rest of the world and are progressing steadily.

However, challenges like urban-rural divides, water scarcity, underdeveloped agriculture, and untapped tourism potential remain pressing. So yes, we’re about to be the 4th largest economy—but we still have a lot to catch up on. We need to connect our rivers, irrigate more fields, move beyond freebies, and ensure that everyone gets a seat—on a bus, on a train, in an educational institute, or at the workplace.

Education, Healthcare and Civil Safety – we all know where do we exactly stand here. Not too critical and not too praiseworthy. Education is surely a big issue. Free Education is not worth employment and the quality education costs lifetime savings. Healthcare as well, is certainly not at a level it should be for the fourth largest economy.

Time is short. We have miles to go. And the first thing we must unlearn is our tendency to over-celebrate small wins. True leadership—a real Vishwaguru—is earned only when access, quality, and excellence reach every corner, for every citizen. It may sound idealistic, but it isn’t impossible

Introduction

The recent GST Council Meeting held at Jaisalmer on 21st December 2024 concluded with some decisions that left the taxpayers confused. One of the key decisions was the levy of GST on caramelised popcorn at 18%. Apart from clarifying what the exact rate structure of popcorn is, this blog will also delve deep into the bureaucratic approach that is being implemented in the GST-related decisions, which is apparently quite contrary to ‘Good and Simple Tax’ and the ‘anti red-tapism’ flags hoisted by the current government.

Rate of GST on Popcorn

Any kind of Popcorn when sold loose – 5%

Salty or any flavoured popcorn except caramel when sold in a packaged form – 12%

Caramelised popcorn when sold in a packaged form – 18%.

It is not that these rates affect the consumption in general. Popcorn is a snack and not a necessity thay prices of which impact general livelihood of people. It is the complexity of rate structure which is being criticised and rightly so, it needs to be.

For some reason, packaged ready-to-eat namkeens are taxed at 12% (saving grace, as they were taxed at 18% until the rate was reduced in 54th GST Council Meeting). Now the thing is, if you sell any savoury item which is salted and has some other spices & flavours in loose form, it attracts 5% GST. So what difference does the branding and packaging make? It is the HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes according to which the items are divided into various chapters and headings and specific rates are assigned to them accordingly. HSN codes comply with the international nomenclature system.

Since packaged popcorn is also namkeen, it is taxed under the same heading as other packaged/branded savoury items at 12%.

Caramel popcorn on the other hand, are now taxed at 18% because it has “added sugar”, and foods items with added sugar are taxed at 18%. 

Purpose and the Perspectives

What can be the purpose behind taxing sugary products higher than salty products? Is that to encourage people to eat less sugar as India is already a diabetes capital? But how has taxing sugary products high changed the scenario so far? Diabetes cases are on the rise and is now found amongst youngsters as well. Taxing sugary products higher is definitely not an answer to curb people’s tendency to consume more sugar.

What causes more frustration is honourable Finance Minister’s way of looking at these issues. As if the GST Council which consists of all the state finance ministers with the Union Finance Minister as its head wasn’t enough, smaller issues are handed over to Group of Ministers (GoM). These Group of Ministers hold meetings prior to GST council meeting. Now understand how it goes. There’s an issue on the table regarding revision of GST rate or exemption of a particular item. A GoM consisting of state finance ministers is formed to decide on the same. GoM schedules meetings and discusses the same. ‘GoM fails to form consensus’ has been the common outcome of most of these meetings during the second half of 2024. Since GoM doesn’t decide, it cannot submit its report to council. Without GoM, council cannot recommend and without Council’s recommendation, the Union Government cannot roll out the changes or amend the law accordingly. Crucial matters which affect the industry, taxpayers, common citizens, the poor and middle class, ease of doing business, ultimately the economy in general are stuck in this vicious bureaucratic circle. A system which may look comprehensive and democratic prima facie, has all the characters of bureaucracy. A funny scene from the web series Panchayat is very much relatable here.

The frequent meetings of the GoMs and their demand for more time to study on crucial aspects which are already affecting the economy adversely and need to be decided upon, is causing more damage than it is actually helping. Three GST Council Meetings are over, the budget of 2024 came by, the 2025-26 budget is around the corner but the exemption of GST on insurance premia remains unresolved. What did the honourable Finance Minister say in the press briefing after 55th GST Council Meeting regarding this? Some key words were ‘procedure’, ‘multiple aspects’, ‘more time is required’. A bureaucrat turned Finance Minister may have a smooth hand for policy execution and yes, India’s macro economy is doing exceptionally well under her tenure but it is this structural havoc which is making taxpayers lives a living hell. As much stereotypical it may sound but the truth is that the minister who’s not chosen in an election is less likely to be people-centric and might care more about ‘following the procedures’ than actually making things work. The way our Prime Minister Modi ji thinks out of the box and doesn’t really care about rules and procedures if the action has better and positive impact, this aspect is clearly missing in FM Sitharaman. She is indeed an intelligent woman and a very experienced one as well, but she needs to throw the bureaucratic luggage and be more people-centric. Perhaps then we might get to see her not caring about procedures and taking decisions lightning-fast.

But it’s  not always Sitharaman. GST Council takes any decision with a consensus from finance ministers of all the states and if the states are not agreeing on something, how can the issue be resolved. This is exactly where a ‘leader’ is required, to form a consensus. State finance ministers can be from opposition parties as well. It is a democratic art to convince the opposition and Modi, Shah Gadkari are the subject matter experts in this thing.

The Litigation Cycle and GST Officers’ Questionable Expertise

There is one more aspect because of which the GST is struggling to be a Good and Simple Tax’ and it is litigation. Small traders get notices. Most of them lack the knowledge about GST portal and have outsourced their GST  compliance to CAs and other tax practitioners. If such professionals, out of their inherent limitation, ignore the notices received by clients and forget to inform the client about it, the taxpayers fail to respond to such notice and an order is arbitrarily passed without hearing the taxpayer out. High Courts of almost all states have tired of remanding such matters to adjudicate and appellate authorities for hearing the petitioner. Many times, the authorities pass an erroneous order by applying the wrong provisions of GST law or by not considering taxpayers response. Even the appellate authorities tend to uphold such erroneous orders. High Courts then interpret the law and pass a judgment. This litigation havoc is being caused by the flawed bureaucracy. Let us take a look at how these GST officers are selected.

1. Group A officers are selected through UPSC

2. Group B and C officers are selected through SSC

3. There is no compulsion to have a bachelor’s degree in commerce with taxation as a speciality to be a GST Officer of any rank.

4. The training is provided on the job.

And this, my friends, is the biggest mistake. The authorities in charge of literally shutting down the businesses of taxpayers may or may not have extensive knowledge of the GST law. How and why is it more important to test a would-be GST officer’s history and civics knowledge than to actually recruit an experienced candidate? Why is there no bar of commerce graduation for anyone to be a GST Officer and why are the candidates from other streams even allowed to appear for exams? First of all, why is there not a separate exam altogether with specific qualification and other pre requisites, designed specifically to recruit experienced, well versed and most importantly, legally literate candidates? When are we going to fix literally basic issues which hinder the execution of law in India?

It is not like that people aren’t at fault or that the government gets all the blame. Multiple crores of GST frauds are also being unearthed and DGGI is doing a wonderful job in that regard. But there are some issues hurting the taxpayers and eventually the economy. We need to fix them foremost.

Some Possible Solutions

1. Separate recruitment for taxation authorities with commerce graduation as a necessary criteria, disallowing any other stream.
2. CA, CS and CMAs should be given preference. The dropouts of such professional degrees having Articleship/Internship experience must also be given higher preference
3. The head of GST Council should be some with great leadership qualities. Forming a consensus is a skill required foremost for this post. Nirmala Sitharaman may continue to be the Finance Minister but GST Council should be headed by someone else.
4. Substance should be given to impact rather than procedures.
5. If GST Council fails to form a consensus on any issue for three meetings in a row, the matter should be handed over to the parliament.
6. The members of GST Council should be called out and penalised internally for non cooperation on crucial issues.

There can be more and better solutions, but if only we try to pop the bureaucratic corn, we’ll get to see a really Good and Simple Tax in execution.

We have celebrated music directors since ages. From Naushad, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, S D and R D Burman to A R Rahman, Shankar Ehsan Loy and Pritam, we have had a history of great musicians because of which we have cult classic songs in every era, but have you ever wondered how a song is produced? How a musician works? We brought you a story of a musician who has delivered some great Marathi albums and some very well-known advertisement jingles, Mr Shantanu Ravindra Pande!

About Shantanu and His Way to the Music Industry

Born and brought up in a middle-class family in Ambajogai, a small town in Maharashtra, Shantanu has always been listening to classical music in his house. Both his parents and his elder brother are keen to music and have learnt Indian Classical Music. Shantanu was a bright child who focused on studies in his school while growing up in this beautiful musical environment. Later, he graduated engineering from College of Engineering Pune aka the famous COEP. It is during these days Shantanu found his own hidden talent.

Opportunity knocked Shantanu’s door as he got to provide music for a short film. He grabbed the opportunity and did so well that he kept on getting more such offers. Initially, he bought a musical keyboard which he played casually with his roommates and then professionally for some radio jingles as his popularity grew. All this while, he was doing equally great with his studies as well and he graduated his engineering with flying colours. He also got placed in a good company for his first job.

Meanwhile, he kept on getting more, and bigger opportunities. He composed advertisement jingles for Tata Tea, Crompton Pump, Bombay Stores, Venu Sabudana etc. During this period, he came in contact with two rising stars of Marathi Music Industry viz. Avadhoot Gandhi and Devdutt Baji. The three of them started working for a visionary Marathi movie director Digpal Lanjekar for his film “Fatteshikast.” Shantanu became Music Arranger under Devdutt Baji’s music direction. Together, they made such a wonderful album for Fatteshikast that it redefined the Folk Music of Maharshtra. The movie director Digpal Lanjekar finalized Devdutt Baji as the music director for his subsequent movies. Shantanu continued to be the music arranger for the recent Marathi Movies Pawankhind and Sher Shivraj. Seeing the splendid work of Shantanu as a music arranger, opportunities have started reaching his door and we will see him become a Pan India Music Director in the mainstream entertainment media very soon.

The Music Production, Arrangement and Programming Process

The process of music production is clearly something of a great journey in itself. In India, movie albums are produced according to the need of script. For example, let’s consider RRR. In order to show the growing friendship between Raju and Bheem, Dosti song is composed. For showing a chemistry between Jenny, Bheem and Raju and the gravity of moment, Naatu Naatu song is composed. Komuram Bheemudo is composed to portray Bheem as a symbol of revolt. These are the needs of script. These needs contain different sort of emotions. Songs are required to amplify those emotions. Same goes with background score. Lyricists do their job either before or after music composition, generally it’s prior to the composition so that composers can understand better what kind of music is to be provided. This is where music composition begins.

Be it composition of song or a background score, movie director explains the scene where song is to be played. Music composer gets the idea to set the basic tune for the song. It is completely a composer’s brainchild about what the basic tune for song is. That must be original. It may be inspired in some cases though. Next thing in music production is arrangement. That’s something Shantanu did in Fatteshikast, Pawankhind and Sher Shivraj and the upcoming movie of the franchise, Subhedar. Arrangement of music includes all the instruments that are played in the music to support the basic tune. Instruments can vary from classical Harmonium, Tabla, Sitar, Dholak to modern Guitar, Drum, Keyboard, Piano, Violene etc. They are all played at a certain pace, in a certain combination so that it gives the best experience. Sometimes these instruments are recorded separately and mixed electronically and sometimes these instruments are played live, all at once, after abundant rehearsal sessions in a recording studio. This one gives an authentic experience. Music piece gets ready after the arrangements. The background singers are engaged at this point. Music director explains the singers about the scale, tempo and other things regarding the particular music piece. After thoroughly going through the music, the singer rehearses the song multiple times until it meets the expectation level of music director. The song is then recorded in a studio. At this moment, a song is fully composed. All the songs of an album are composed this way. The album is then sold to the music labels (e.g. T Series, Zee Music etc). Sometimes a distributor is also engaged to distribute the albums with their copyrights to different platforms. Big music labels distribute albums by themselves.

Shantanu’s work with Devdutt Manisha Baji and Digpal Lanjekar

The Experience of music arrangements with Devdutt Baji for the 3 movies as described by Shantanu was wonderful. The most famous song from Fatteshikast, “Hechi Yel Deva Naka was composed overnight but the Qawwali Song “Wo Masiha Aa Gaya Hai” from the same album took much time and mammoth efforts. The chartbuster hit album of Pawankhind is by far the most versatile work of Shantanu. On one hand he arranged music for a Maharashtrian Folk song in the genre of Bharud called “Yugat Manadali” where he gathered all the folk instruments and made such a beat that made the audience crazy. At the same time, he arranged music for the superhit “Raja Aala” which has more of western composition. During the composition of Pawankhind album, there was a scene where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is descending fort Panhala along with his 600 soldiers and a duplicate. As per the plan, the duplicate was to be separated to follow the vulnerable path and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj would go by the comparatively less enemy supervised way.  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj got emotional at this moment but the duplicate Shiva Kashid is ready to die for his King. This scene and the subsequent scenes where they keep on going separate ways on a rainy night through dense forests, required a music piece which would portray all the emotions accurately, both through the lyrics and music. At this point Shantanu said, Avadhoot Gandhi dug out a perfect song from history, written by Saint Tukaram “Rani Nighata Shur” and then they arranged music for it.  The wonder they created through this song made everyone cry at the theatres when it played! That, I think, is a sign of real achievement for an artist.

After Pawankhind, Shantanu arranged music for the next film in Digpal’s franchise “Sher Shivraj.” The magic of making the brilliant music by the Duo of Shantanu and Devdutt worked in this movie as well. Everyone in Maharashtra is well familiar with this story. Still, creating such an engagement to the movie wouldn’t have been possible without the music.

The songs “Yelkot Devacha,” “Amhi Veer Zunjar” and “He Shaktipeeth Nayike” were also at par with the Duo’s previous work.

Shantanu’s latest work has unveiled with the release of the latest movie in the universe of Shivraj Ashtak, “Subhedar”. He has done a phenomenal job as an associate music arranger and producer, specially for the background music of Subhedar. The movie is currently running in theatres and is going hit. Audience is appreciating many things about movie including its background score.

Shantanu’s work with Onkarswaroop for TDM and Chowk

Shantanu’s other notable works in the recent times include music arrangement, programming and production of the Marathi movie album “Chowk” (2023) and “Bakula” song from Marathi movie “TDM” (2023). Family’s Support

While asked upon the support of family for his career so far, Shantanu shared an interesting story. When he was offered his first album “Fatteshikast” for music arrangement, Shantanu resigned from his job and did not tell his parents about it. He shifted to his elder brother’s apartment in Mumbai for the work. His brother supported him with all the trust. The production went on for months and Shantanu kept on lying to his parents that he was doing job whenever asked upon. He completed the work. Movie released after a few days and a premier show was aired. Shantanu was obviously invited. Shantanu called his parents to Mumbai and surprised them in the premier show. He finally told his parents about the opportunity he got and that he wanted to further his career in Music Industry.  His parents agreed to his career choice, and they are very proud of their son as he is proving his word.

A Genre Defining Musician

When you listen other individual songs on his site, especially Khwabida, you realise that this guy has a potential that of A R Rahman, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, M M Kreem and Shankar Ehsan Loy. His sense of music is far better than those established overrated copycats nowadays. Therefore, we need to celebrate him. We need to bring such talent to the heights of success. दिग्दर्शक नोलन बद्दल

हॉलिवूड दिग्दर्शक ख्रिस्तोफर नोलन त्या तुरळक लोकांपैकी एक आहे जो चित्रपटाला व्यवसाय म्हणून पाहत असताना आपल्या प्रेक्षकांना उत्कृष्ट अनुभव कसा येईल याची पुरेपूर काळजी घेतो. असं करत असताना त्याचे चित्रपट इतके गुंतागुंतीचे आणि समजण्यास अवघड असतात की बरेच वेळा एकदा बघून भागत नाही. द प्रेस्टिज, बॅटमॅन ट्रायलॉजी, इन्सेप्शन, डंकर्क सारख्या सिनेमांमधून नेहमीच काहीतरी भन्नाट, अफलातून दाखवत असताना त्याच वेळी मानवी भावनांच्या कसोटीवर इतक्या सहजगत्या नोलन ने कथांची मांडणी केलेली आहे की क्लिष्ट विषय, अत्यंत गुंतागुंतीची व कधीच सरळ रेषेत न जाणारी कथा, संभवतः प्रत्येक वेळी विचारही केले नसतील असे कथानक असताना देखील प्रेक्षकांना नोलन ची चित्रपटातील दुनिया नवखी किंवा परकी वाटत नाही. इंटरस्टेलर तर आजही जगातील सर्वोत्कृष्ट चित्रपट म्हणावा इतका परफेक्ट आहे. यातील डंकर्क काही प्रमाणात अपवाद आहे कारण तो सत्य घटनेवर आधारित आहे.

ओपनहायमरच्या निमित्ताने प्रथमच नोलन ने चरित्रपट अर्थात बायोपिक बनवलाय. अरेखिय कथन अर्थात नॉन लिनियर स्टोरी टेलींगच्या त्याच्या खास शैलीची इथेही आपल्याला मेजवानी मिळते. शास्त्रज्ञ ओपनहायमर याने अण्वस्त्रांचा शोध लावून जगातील पहिली अण्वस्त्र चाचणी घडली त्या मॅनहॅटन प्रोजेक्ट ची धुरा सांभाळली. थोडक्यात पहिली अण्वस्त्र घडवणारा हाच तो शास्त्रज्ञ. कथेची पार्श्वभूमी इतकी मोठी आणि व्यापक आहे की तुम्हाला त्याचं वरवरचं ज्ञान हे केवळ वर्षानुवर्ष शाळा महाविद्यालयांपासून ते पार मित्रांसोबत रंगलेल्या गप्पाटप्पा मधून casually आलेलं असेल तर तुम्ही कथेला किमान समजू शकता.

ओपनहायमरच्या कथेमागची पार्श्वभूमी

जगाची तत्कालीन राजकीय, सामाजिक, वैचारिक परिस्थिती, विज्ञानाच्या, विशेषतः पदार्थ विज्ञान अर्थात फिजिक्सच्या रुंदावणाऱ्या कक्षा नवनवीन वैज्ञानिक शोध घडवून आणत होत्या. युरोप अमेरिकेत अनेक नावाजलेल्या वैज्ञानिकांची मांदियाळी अगदी रोज नवीन शोध लावल्यासारखी व्रतस्थ होती. यात निल्स बोर पासून ते हायजनबर्ग आणि रिचर्ड फाईनमन पासून ते प्रत्यक्ष आईन्स्टाईन पर्यंत अनेक जणांचं योगदान होतं.

याच विज्ञानाचा गैरवापर करून अण्वस्त्र बनवण्यासाठी पहिला प्रयत्न हिटलरने सुरू केला. हा काळ पहिल्या आणि दुसऱ्या महायुद्धाच्या बरोबर मधला. दुसऱ्या महायुद्धाच्या वादळापूर्वीची ही जणू शांतता होती. हिटलरच्या सर्वश्रुत राक्षसी वृत्तीमुळे जर्मनीतील काही शास्त्रज्ञांनी आईन्स्टाईनच्या मदतीने ही बातमी अमेरिकेचे तत्कालीन राष्ट्राध्यक्ष फ्रँकलिन रुझवेल्ट यांच्यापर्यंत पोचवली. रुझवेल्ट यांनी निर्णय घेतला की हिटलरच्या अगोदर अमेरिकेने अण्वस्त्र बनवायचे. हे सगळं प्रचंड गोपनीयता राखत करायचं, इतकी की ही गोष्ट राष्ट्राध्यक्ष, शास्त्रज्ञ, सैन्यदलातील उच्चपदस्थ अधिकारी सोडता कुणालाही माहित नव्हती, अगदी उपराष्ट्राध्यक्ष हॅरी ट्रुमन यांनाही. रुझवेल्ट यांच्या निधनानंतर जेव्हा ट्रुमन राष्ट्राध्यक्ष झाले तेव्हा त्यांना ही गोष्ट समजली.

हे होईपर्यंत शास्त्रज्ञ म्हणून ओपनहायमरचा कसा प्रवास राहिलाय हे चित्रपट पाहिल्यावर तुम्हा सर्वांना कळेलच. यात त्याच्यावर असणारा साम्यवादी विचारांचा प्रभाव, त्याचे अमेरिकन साम्यवादी नेत्यांसोबत असणारे संबंध, स्टॅलिन प्रणित सोव्हिएत रशियाची हेरगिरी या सर्व गोष्टी सुद्धा पार्श्वभूमी मध्ये थोड्याशा अवगत असणं गरजेचं आहे.

समीक्षा

आता येऊ चित्रपटावर. IMAX कॅमेऱ्याने शूट झालेला हा चित्रपट शक्यतो IMAX थिएटरलाच बघावा. महत्वाचं म्हणजे सिनेमात एकही CGI निर्मित सीन नाही. त्यामुळे अणुस्फोट घडतो ते दृश्य IMAX स्क्रीन वर न भूतो न भविष्यति असा अनुभव देऊन जातं. लुडविग गोरांसनचं पार्श्वसंगीत हादरवून सोडणारं, अंगावर काटा आणणारं, खुर्चीला खिळवून ठेवणारं आणि प्रसंगी रडवणारं सुद्धा आहे. यात सीलियन मर्फी, रॉबर्ट डाउनी ज्युनियर आणि फ्लॉरेन्स पुघ या तिघांचा अभिनय काळजाला भिडणारा आहे. सिलीयन मर्फी ने मुख्य भूमिका ऑस्कर जिंकण्याजोगी साकारली आहे. भावनांचे अनेक कंगोरे त्याने इतके चपखल साकारलेत की स्क्रीनवर सुरू असणाऱ्या संवादापेक्षा पात्राच्या मनात काय सुरु आहे त्याकडे आपण जास्त लक्ष देतो. फ्लॉरेन्स पुघ ने साकारलेली जीन टेटलॉक प्रसंगी रडवते सुद्धा.

चित्रपटाचं कथानक एकाच वेळी ओपनहायमरचा जीवन प्रवास, त्याचा भूतकाळ, अण्वस्त्र चाचणी नंतर त्याच्यावर राजकीय उद्देश्याने बसलेली चौकशी समिती, त्यानंतर भरलेला खटला आणि अण्वस्त्राचा शोध व चाचणी या व अशा अनेक आघाड्यांवर चालते. एक क्षणही विचलित न होता हा चित्रपट पाहावा लागतो.

चित्रपटातील संवाद हा आणखी महत्वाचा स्तंभ आहे ज्यावर हा सिनेमा अगदी सक्षमपणे उभा आहे. यातील एकूण एक डायलॉग येणाऱ्या काळात अगदी म्हणींसारखा वापरला जाईल यात शंका नाही.

महत्वाचे तीन सीन्स (Spoiler Alert)

चित्रपटातील तीन दृश्य खास प्रभाव सोडतात. पुढे वाचण्याच्या अगोदर, तुम्ही अद्याप चित्रपट पाहिला नसेल तर हा पॉइंट स्क्रोल डाऊन/स्किप करा कारण यात स्पॉइलर्स आहेत. पहिलं दृश्य म्हणजे ओपनहायमर आणि जीन मधील सुरुवातीचा संवाद ज्यात विचारधारेशी निष्ठा असणं आणि गुलामी असणं यात किती फरक असतो आणि वस्तुनिष्ठ आकलन करून स्वतंत्र विचार कसा करावा हे इतकं वेगळ्या ढंगात आणि इतक्या चपखलपणे मांडण्यात आलय की त्याचे एकाच वेळी अनेक अर्थ निघतात. एक सीन ज्यामध्ये हिरोशिमा आणि नागासाकी वर अणुबॉम्ब पडल्यानंतर ओपनहायमर भाषण देत असतो आणि एकाच वेळी भाषणात जहरी राष्ट्रवादी भाषेचा वापर करत असताना त्याला नजरेसमोर मात्र अणुस्फोट आणि त्याची भीषणता दिसत असते. एक आणखी सीन आहे जिथे राष्ट्राध्यक्ष ट्रुमनशी झालेल्या संवादात हिरोशिमा व नागासाकी बद्दल ओपनहायमर हळहळ व्यक्त करतो. तेव्हा ट्रुमनच्या बोलण्यातून राजसत्ता कशी शोध व निर्मितीच्या शक्तीचा गैरवापर करते हे आपल्याला दिसून येतं.

त्रुटी व चुका

असं नाही की चित्रपटात काही त्रुटी नाहीत. तीन तासांची अत्यंत लांबलचक मांडणी असल्याने डोळ्यांना क्षीण येऊ शकतो. ओपनहायमर यांचा संस्कृत व भगवद्गीतेचा गाढा अभ्यास होता. त्याचा संदर्भ देत असताना तो जीन सोबत होत असणाऱ्या सेक्स सीन मध्येच का दिला हे कळायला मार्ग नाही. मुळात दिग्दर्शक नोलन यांना भारताचं विलक्षण आकर्षण आहे, ते त्यांच्या अगोदरच्या चित्रपटांमधून  या-न-त्या प्रकारे दिसतं, जसं की टेनेट मध्ये दाखवलेलं मुंबई शहर आणि एक अत्यंत महत्वाचं भारतीय पात्र, इंटरस्टेलर मधील भारतीय वायुसेनेचं विमान, बॅटमॅन बिगिंस आणि द डार्क नाईट रायजेस मधील रास अल घुल च्या त्या कैदखाण्याचं जयपूर मध्ये झालेलं शूटिंग वगैरे. एकंदरच या माणसाला गीता हा हिंदूंचा धर्मग्रंथ आहे हे माहीत नसण्याचं कारण नाही, मग अशा सीन मध्ये दाखवून शंभर कोटी लोकांच्या धार्मिक भावनांचा अनादर नोलन ला करावासा वाटला असेल? नोलन डाव्या आणि भारताचा द्वेष करणाऱ्या अमेरिकी लोकांपैकी नक्कीच नसल्याने हे त्याने जाणीवपूर्वक केलं असेल असं वाटत तर नाही, परंतु या सीनला विचारपूर्वक लिहायला हवं होतं हे नक्की.

हा ओपनहायमर चित्रपट एकंदरच या शतकातील, नव्हे आजवरच्या सर्व चित्रपटांच्या इतिहासातील अत्यंत महत्त्वाचा व सर्वात उत्कृष्ट कलाकृतींपैकी एक असून, जमल्यास IMAX मध्येच हा सिनेमा बघावा. आमच्याकडून या चित्रपटास 4.5/5.

एक जण येतो, त्याला आपण D म्हणुया. अनेक वर्ष केवळ मालिकांपुरता मर्यादित राहिलेला इतिहासाचा विषय मोठ्या पडद्यावर मार्वेल च्या धाटणीवर हा D युनिव्हर्स बनवून मांडायला लागतो. सुरुवातीच्या दोन चित्रपटांमधून यश म्हणावं तितकं आलं नसलं आणि बजेटही जेमतेमच असलं तरीही मांडणी, अभिनय, दिग्दर्शन उत्तमरीत्या सादर करून आणि विशेषतः इतिहासाचा सखोल अभ्यास करून हे चित्रपट बनवले असल्याने यात जान राहते, आणि प्रेक्षक त्याच्या तिसऱ्या चित्रपटाची आतुरतेने वाट पाहतात. कोरोना नंतर 2022 मध्ये तो चित्रपट येतो, बजेट आणि तांत्रिक बाबी अजूनही कमजोर असल्या तरी मागच्या दोन सिनेमांपेक्षा हा कैकपटीने अधिक चांगला निघतो व तुफान यशस्वी होतो.

दरम्यान हेच हेरून मराठीतला एक मोठा यशस्वी दिग्दर्शक, त्याला आपण P म्हणुया, मोठ्या बॅनरखाली असाच एक सिनेमा आणतो, जो तांत्रिकदृष्ट्या तर या तीन सिनेमांना पुरून उरतो, पण इतिहासाचा जो भक्तिमय अभ्यास त्या D ला दाखवता आला तो या P ला दाखवता आला नाही. तरीही, भरपूर “मास” आणि डायलॉग्ज चा मसाला ओतल्याने महत्वाचं म्हणजे कास्टिंग चांगलं केल्याने हाही सिनेमा चालतो.

त्या D ची एका मालिका बनवणाऱ्या दिग्दर्शकासोबत, याला आपण A म्हणुया, शाब्दिक चकमक होते आणि हा A खुन्नस मध्ये म्हणून की काय, बरोबर त्याच विषयावर सिनेमा बनवतो ज्याची घोषणा या D ने त्याच्या चौथ्या सिनेमात केलेली असते. A हा सिनेमा फक्त दोन तीन महिन्यात बनवून रिलीज करतो. सिनेमा आपटतो. दरम्यान या D ने सुद्धा काळ वेळ आणि संयम काहीही न पाळता तिसरा सिनेमा झाल्याच्या तीन महिन्यांचा आत चौथाही सिनेमा रिलीज केलेला असतो. एका मोठ्या दाक्षिणात्य सिनेमाच्या वादळात तो अत्यंत महत्वाचा असणारा चौथा सिनेमा सुद्धा कुठल्या कुठे हरवतो. हा चौथा सिनेमा तांत्रिकदृष्ट्या त्या तिसऱ्याच्याच जवळपास असल्याने तिसऱ्या सिनेमाला जे प्रेक्षकांनी भरभरून दिलं ते यांनी कुठं घातलं हा प्रश्न पडतो, पण मग त्यातला एक कलाकार म्हणतो की तिसरा व चौथा दोन्ही सिनेमे एकत्र बनून तयार होते. ठीक आहे, मान्य केलं, आता पाचव्या मध्ये तरी बजेट नीट लावतील अशी अपेक्षा.

या दरम्यान आणखी दोन तीन दिग्दर्शक याच विषयांवर असेच सिनेमे आणण्याचं जाहीर करतात. त्यातला एक तर कमालच करतो, चक्क एका माकडउड्या मारणाऱ्या हिंदी कलाकाराला महत्वाच्या भूमिकेत कास्ट करतो. दरम्यान D ने केलेल्या त्या सुपरहिट तिसऱ्या सिनेमाची तांत्रिकदृष्ट्या सक्षम मात्र ऐतिहासिकदृष्ट्या अत्यंत भिकार आवृत्ती दिवाळी मध्ये रिलीज होते. त्यात मुख्य भूमिकेत असलेला कलाकार त्या कॅरेक्टर ची तर आब घालतोच, स्वतःची सुद्धा घालतो. त्यावर राजकीय वाद सुद्धा होतात. सिनेमा मात्र दिवाळी मुळे हिट जातो.

आता या दोनचार सिनेमांचं यश पाहून अनेक दिग्दर्शक यात उड्या मारतात व याहीवर्षी असे सिनेमे यायला लागतात. मग कुठे घोगऱ्या गळ्याची गोरीपान नटी एका ऐतिहासिक मर्दानीची भूमिका करणार हे कळतं, कुठे D च्या पाचव्या सिनेमाचं शूटिंग तीन महिन्यात आटपल्याचं कळतं. कुठे P आणखी तीन सिनेमे त्या महत्वाच्या तगड्या कलाकाराला मुख्य भूमिकेत घेऊन करत असल्याची खबर मिळते तर कुठे A अजूनही स्वस्तातल्या मालिका आणि त्याच सेट व बजेट वर सिनेमा बनवत असल्याचं हलकं कानावर येतं.

तामिळनाडूच्या इतिहासात तब्बल दीड हजार वर्ष चोल घराण्याचं नाव येतं. 1950 च्या दशकात पाच कादंबऱ्या सुद्धा प्रकाशित होतात ज्यामध्ये इतिहास व कल्पकतेमधून तमिळ लोकांच्या मनामनात चोल घराणं अजरामर होतं. तेव्हाच यावर सिनेमा बनवण्याचं अनेकांचं स्वप्न होतं मात्र तरीही 64 हून अधिक वर्ष हे स्वप्न पूर्ण होत नाही. खुद्द मणिरत्नम, ज्याने शेवटी सिनेमा बनवला, त्यालाही अगोदर 3 वेळा अपयश येतं. पण जेव्हा मागच्या वर्षी त्याने पोंनियीन सेल्वन बनवला, केवळ तामिळनाडू मध्येच त्या सिनेमाने 400 कोटीचा धंदा केला. त्यांचे सर्व मोठे कलाकार व दिग्दर्शक अमेरिकेत ह्युस्टन ला झालेल्या त्या सिनेमाच्या ट्रेलर व म्युझिक लाँच ला हजर होते.

तो सिनेमा दोन भागांमध्ये बनला, बाहुबली ची कॉपी करण्याचा त्यांनी प्रयत्न सुद्धा केला नाही. उलट action scenes जमतील तेवढे रियलिस्टिक ठेवले त्यांनी. पहिला भाग जर सोनं असेल तर दुसरा भाग अगदी रत्नांची खाण निघाला. कलाकारांचा अभिनय इतका सुंदर की प्रत्यक्ष ते चोल घराण्याचे लोक आहेत की काय असा भास होऊ लागला. बारकावे इतके, की अगदी त्या राजकुमारीच्या अंगावरील दागिने सुद्धा खरे सोन्याचे वापरले त्यांनी. एवढंच नव्हे, तर त्या काळचे सांस्कृतिक धागे, त्या काळच्या लोकांचे उद्योग, आपसातील संबंध सुद्धा प्रचंड बारकाईने दाखवले गेले आहेत. तब्बल 500 कोटी बजेट मध्ये हे दोन सिनेमे त्यांनी बनवले. संपूर्ण तमिळ फिल्म इंडस्ट्री या एका प्रोजेक्ट पुढे एकवटली.

आपल्या इतिहासात काल्पनिक मिरची मसाला घालण्याची तसूभरही गरज नाही इतका रोमांचक इतिहास आहे. जवळजवळ 250 वर्षांच्या कालखंडात मराठ्यांचे पराक्रम सांगावे तेवढे कमी आहेत. कसलाही वाद न करता छ्त्रपती शिवाजी महाराज, छत्रपती संभाजी महाराज, महाराणी ताराराणी, बाळाजी विश्वनाथ, बाजीराव पेशवे, मल्हारराव होळकर, महादजी शिंदे, माणकोजी शिंदे ते थेट झाशीची राणी व छत्रपती शाहू महाराजांपर्यंत एक चांगली, बिग बजेट, तांत्रिकदृष्ट्या सक्षम, उत्तम अभिनित व दिग्दर्शित अशी चांगली Pan India चित्रपट मालिका आपल्याला बनवता येणार नाही का? की जनतेच्या भावनांशी खेळून चिल्लर गोळा करण्यातच आमचे दिग्दर्शक धन्य आहेत? सुबोध भावे आणि अक्षय कुमार सारख्यांना महाराजांच्या भूमिकेत दाखवून मराठी प्रेक्षकांच्या माथी कुठलं पाप मारताय? बजेटच्या बाबतीत विड्याला चुना फासून तेच ते प्रकार कुठवर बघायचे आम्ही? मालिकेत दाखवतात तशी पटकथा व सेट्स, पोट सुटलेले कलाकार महाराजांच्या भूमिकेत हे का सहन करावं आम्ही तिकिटाचे पैसे देऊन? मसालेदार बनवण्यासाठी अनैतिहासिक गोष्टी सिनेमात घुसवून थेटर मध्ये टाळ्या शिट्ट्या किती दिवस मिळतील? तुम्हाला जाणीव तरी आहे का की तुम्ही कुठला विषय हाताळताय? तुमच्यापेक्षा चांगलं तर पोवाडे आणि भारुडांमध्ये स्टोरीटेलिंग केलं जातं. तुमचे हे असले थोतांड सिनेमे बघण्यापेक्षा चौथीचं इतिहासाचं पुस्तक पुन्हा पुन्हा वाचून जास्त ज्ञान आणि मजा दोन्ही येईल. तुमच्या या मसालेदार चित्रपटांपेक्षा अंगावर रोमांच आणणारी व्याख्यानं जास्त चांगली आहेत. सुधरा रे मराठी दिग्दर्शकानो, नका मराठी प्रेक्षकाला गृहीत धरू, अन्यथा तुमचे चांगले सिनेमे सुद्धा चालणार नाहीत आणि नेहमीप्रमाणे त्याचं खापर तुम्ही प्रेक्षकांवर फोडाल आणि स्वतः हिंदी सिनेमात कुठे साईड रोल मिळतो का म्हणून प्रोड्युसर्सचे उंबरे झिजवाल.

June 6^th, 1674. This day marked a history to be remembered for at least a thousand years if not forever. Probably for the first time after Chandragupta Maurya, a man with no royal family background was coroneted as a Chhatrapati. For the first time in previous 150 years, a truly native ruler backed by the truly native people had risen up to be the King. The next sentence might hurt those who love the left-narrated versions of Mughal history but I don’t care, because the truth was that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj became king against all odds set by the megalomaniac bigot, the imperialist monarch, the butcher of Hindus called Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb had lost his biggest battle the day Maharaj refused to bow down before him while throwing away his tray of gifts, coronation was just the symbolic and religious ceremony to embrace the fact. In our blog today, to celebrate the 350^th year of Shivrajyabhishek in 2023, we’re going to take a look at why Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Hindavi Swarajya was a foundation stone of India’s independence struggle.

1. The rivalry between Aurangzeb and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Perhaps only two people in 17^th Century knew each other fully well, Aurangzeb and Shivaji Maharaj. You have to know how strong Aurangzeb was, and thus you’ll know how Shivaji Maharaj was even stronger.

During the reign of Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb was sent to conquer Deccan where Shivaji Maharaj was also laying strong foundation of Maratha Empire at the same time. Aurangzeb started conquering one after another forts of Adil Shahi. At the Siege of Bidar in 1657, it was Adil Shah’s strongest commander, Afzal Khan who captured Aurangzeb. Note that Aurangzeb begged for mercy, tried threatening with taking his father’s name but Afzal Khan wouldn’t listen. However, the then Army Chief of Adil Shahi, Khan Mohammad was feared enough with the threat of Shah Jahan. He gave safe passage to Aurangzeb and thus Aurangzeb fled the sight. 2 years later in 1959, this same Afzal Khan approached Shivaji Maharaj with a massive 40,000 army, 3000+ cavalry, 1600 cannons, 85+ elephants and a promise that He’ll capture King Shivaji dead or alive without even descending from his horse. We all know what happened on 10^th November 1659, this invincible, cruel, mighty Afzal Khan was ripped open by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on broad daylight and his army was defeated, many killed, some managed to flee.

This was noted by Aurangzeb and he very well knew that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was going to be a threat for him in future. That’s why, he sent his invincible commander and his maternal uncle Shaista Khan with an army of 1,00,000 to Pune in 1660. By the time, Maharaj had already finished more than half of Adil Shahi but was stuck at Rajgad with less manpower. Shaista Khan committed horrendous atrocities on people of Pune and nearby, deliberately so, to bring Shivaji Maharaj out of the mountains. He saw what happened to Afzal Khan when he entered Maharaj’s mountains. That’s why he was risking nothing from his side. Maharaj defeated all his army raids and blocked their passages to Konkan. He deliberately sent the defeated soldiers back alive so that Shaista Khan gets depressed to see himself losing, to defeat his courage. On a fine night in 1663, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj did a surgical strike on Shaista Khan and cut 3 of his fingers. Shaista Khan fled with all of his army and tails between his legs. This was a big psychological and military win for Shivaji Maharaj and a direct message to Aurangzeb.

Aurangzeb started his reign in 1658 after killing his own brothers and imprisoning his father. He committed atrocities against Sikhs, their Gurus, erased Hindu temples and killed many Hindus, re-imposed Jaziya, a tax for non-Muslims to practice their religions, which was earlier abolished by his grandfather Akbar. Entire North India under Aurangzeb was traumatized, feared, terrorized and no one dared to speak against him.

After losing the Shaista Khan chapter, Aurangzeb played a brilliant card by sending Mirza Raja Jaisingh to defeat Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The battle and siege of Purandar resulted in a treaty, as Maharaj avoided potential loss coming out of a full-scale war. Maharaj lost 23 forts to Mughals.

2. The Agra Chapter – Turning Point of Indian Medieval History

Afterwards in 1666, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was invited to Agra for Aurangzeb’s birth anniversary. Here’s a catch, Aurangzeb was a well-known deceiver and it wasn’t surprising for Shivaji Maharaj as he had around 5000 spies in his employment. Maharaj knew what Aurangzeb would do to the rival who killed the mighty Afzal Khan in broad daylight and made the strongest Mughal Commander flee in just a surgical strike. Aurangzeb did have plans, so did Shivaji Maharaj. And this is why, we need to understand what exactly was happening between them, and how this Agra chapter made Shivaji Maharaj the ultimate power, despite having a way smaller Empire than that of Aurangzeb.

From what I understand, Aurangzeb wanted Shivaji Maharaj to submit before him as a Mansabdar (Ruler under patronage) and was not ready to treat him as a King of equal merits.

That’s why he deliberately positioned him backward in his court when arrived, and treated him like a Mansabdar. Shivaji Maharaj reacted furiously and what he did next, marked the beginning of end for Mughal Empire. He threw away the Qillat (gift) offered by Aurangzeb, refused to perform Kurnisht (a symbolic gesture of submission) and spoke against him eye-to-eye. Remember, the court was full of rulers all across India and nobody was allowed even to look at Aurangzeb, let alone be speaking eye-to-eye and insulting him. This sheer action by Shivaji Maharaj spread like a bullet in every corner of Agra and later, everywhere in North India. People got to know that Mughals could very much be challenged and their Messiah is none other than a Maratha King from Deccan called Shivaji Raje Bhosale.

Aurangzeb held Maharaj captive for this so called “Ghustakhi” and planned to kill him, but Shivaji Raje escaped under the nose of Aurangzeb and returned safely to Deccan. By the time he returned, entire India was aware of him and his bravery. When he killed Afzal, ballads were sung in entire South India and this Agra Chapter made him a Hero in North India.

Here is one more thing to note, that Shivaji Maharaj was brave enough to face and insult Aurangzeb in his court despite having no one on his side, while the mighty Aurangzeb did not even try to enter Deccan until after Shivaji Maharaj passed away. This is the difference between a Tyrant and a true King. Aurangzeb very well knew that people loved Shivaji Maharaj. They backed him in Deccan and so would they do in North India as well. A few alliances on his side and Shivaji Maharaj would march on Delhi at his own pace and will. Aurangzeb wanted to stop all these, and that is the exact reason he spent 27 out of 50 of his years of reign just to demolish Hindavi Swarajya. Yes, you heard it right, he thrown away his Crown “Kimansh” swearing that he’ll wear it only when he destroys Maratha Kingdom root and stem, he died without the crown on his head. That’s the legacy that Shivaji Maharaj had left behind.

3. The Coronation or “Rajyabhishek”

Aurangzeb did everything in his capacity to stop Shivaji Maharaj from getting coronated. He bought Brahmins of Deccan to declare Maharaj a Shudra, Maharaj called the biggest Brahmin of the era “Gaga Bhatt” from Kashi to coronate himself. Gaga Bhatt declared Maharaj to be of pure Suryawanshi Rajput lineage, related to that of Maharana Pratap. The coronation happened as planned at the new Capital of Swrajya called Raigad. Many people including two British East India Company officers had attended the ceremony. Shivaji Maharaj had taken care of purifying the Marathi language, that the burden of coronation expenses would not fall on shoulders of his subjects and releasing his currency with a Sanskrit quote written on it. He also started a calendar named “Shivshak”. Shivaji Maharaj became Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with titles such as “GoBrahmanPratiPalak”, “PraudhPratapPurandara”, “Kshatriyakulavatans”, “Maharajadhiraj”, “Yogiraj”, “Gajapati”, “Ashwapati”. Remember folks, he was not born a King, neither seized any throne by killing his own brothers, he became King because his people believed in him, fought for him and died for him.

4. The Ram-Rajya of Swarajya

Shivaji Maharaj’s Hindavi Swarajya was truly a remarkable Kingdom. Despite being small on territory and revenue, Maharaj’s soldiers had the best salaries. His officers were strictly warned for not taking even a stem from farmers without paying them adequately. The soldiers were warned not to touch even a leaf of grass of farmers on any mission, and if you must, you must compensate. Shivaji Maharaj did not even spare his uncle when he came to know about his corruption. He exempted taxes on many occasions such as droughts, hailstorm and even on festivals.

During the 6 years followed by coronation, Shivaji Maharaj continued his conquest southwards and liberated people from the cruel Adil Shah and Bahamani Sultunate. He extended his empire all towards Gingi and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. In his own words, “अहत तंजावर, तहत पेशावर, हे हिंदवी स्वराज्य व्हावे, हे तो श्रींची इच्छा!”, Meaning it is God’s will to have an indigenous rule from Thanjavur to all the way Peshawar.

While Aurangzeb was a religious fanatic, Shivaji Maharaj never hated, neither did he discriminate based on religion. He very well knew the difference between protection of motherland, culture, Dharma and invasion, butchery and bigotry.

5. After the Demise of Shivaji Maharaj

The news reached Aurangzeb and he came running towards Deccan in 1681. He wanted to demolish the Maratha Kingdom. He thought the Marathas would become weak after the demise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, turned out his son was a lion. For 9 years straight, Aurangzeb fought more than 100 battles with Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and lost all of them. He was seeing himself lose and thus got impatient. He captured Sambhaji Maharaj by deception and killed him mercilessly after torturing him for 40 days. He then burnt down the Capital of Swarajya “Raigad”, captured Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife and brother. He hoped at least then he would triumph, turned out a 25-year-old widow queen, Shivaji Maharaj’s daughter in law, Queen Tararani made him drink the water of all the ponds of Sahyadri and continued the resistance. They say Aurangzeb died of old age in 1707, but I am pretty sure he died of ego crash seeing himself lose against a widow queen.

Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath made sure that the Mughal lineage destroys by placing a dummy prince on Delhi throne with the help of a Mughal commander he befriended. He then seized all the territory for Marathas and confined Mughals to the borders of Delhi. We all know what his son, Peshwa Bajirao-I did in his conquest. Even after losing in Panipat war, Marathas made sure Abdali won’t return for next 50 years. Marathas made Abdali flee in the earlier conquest and had set their flags beyond the borders of Attock, present day Pakistan. Thus, the descendants of Shivaji Maharaj, both biological and ideological, fulfilled the wish of Shivaji Maharaj’s “Peshawar to Thanjavur Hindavi Swarajya”. It is the Marathas from whom Britishers took control of India. The Duke of Wellington had famously said that defeating Napoleon was much easier than defeating the Marathas. This is the legacy of the man who dared enough to challenge the mightiest empire in the world by throwing away his gifts and by refusing to submit. This is the legacy of a man who built a Kingdom for the welfare of people. This is why Shivaji Maharaj is the most important and greatest ruler India has seen in a thousand years.

6. Influence on Freedom Struggle and Social Reforms

The First War of Independence was led by Queen of Jhansi, Rani Laxmi Bai, who herself was a Queen of Maratha Kingdom of Jhansi, and thus a devout follower of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Other great freedom fighters such as Lokmanya Tilak, Subhash Chandra Bose, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Birsa Munda, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Chaphekar Brothers etc were all influenced by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and had clearly mentioned it. Social Reformers like Mahatma Phule, Dr. B R Ambedkar, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj (who himself was a King in Shivaji Maharaj’s lineage) had also referred to Shivaji Maharaj on many occasions. Philosophers like Swami Vivekananda and Shri Aurobindo Swami were staunch followers of Shivaji Maharaj’s ideology and work. In fact, Shri Aurobindo Swami referred Shivaji Maharaj as a Vibhuti, without whom our entire civilization would have wiped out from this planet, just like it did in present day Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Even after the independence of India, The Sanyukta Maharashtra Chalval, The Mill Workers Protests and even the protests against Emergency drew motivation from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj is still alive in the ignited Marathi minds, in the ignited Indian minds and will always empower those who fight against injustice.

देशात इन्फ्रास्ट्रक्चरचा विकास तेजीने सुरू आहे. रस्ते, रेल्वे, विमानतळ, मेट्रो सगळं अगदी दणक्यात वाढतंय. विचार केला नव्हता, मात्र रेल्वेने मनावर घेतलं विद्युतीकरणाला आणि गेल्या तीन चार वर्षांतच साधारण साठ टक्के असणारं रेल्वेमार्गाचं विद्युतीकरण आता शंभर टक्क्यांच्या जवळपास पोचलंय. देशातील चौथा व महाराष्ट्रातील पहिला रेल्वेच्या डब्यांचा कारखाना जवळजवळ बनून तयार आहे लातुरात. म्हणजे उद्या देशाच्या कानाकोपऱ्यात धावणाऱ्या रेल्वेच्या डब्यावर “Coach built by Marathwada Rail Coach Factory, Latur” असं दिसेलही. याच्या फेज 2 मध्ये तर मेट्रो डब्यांचा कारखाना देखील होऊ घातलाय. एकंदरच लातूर आता रेल्वेच्या नकाशावरचं अत्यन्त महत्वाचं ठाणं आहे यात दुमत नाही.

मात्र असं असतानाही काही मूलभूत सुविधांमध्ये अजूनही का बरं अडकून पडलीये लातूरची रेल्वे? का म्हणून लातूर रोड हे जंक्शन असूनही एक दुर्लक्षित स्थानक आहे? का म्हणून लातूर स्टेशन ची इमारत आजही गावखेड्याच्या छोट्या स्टेशन एवढीच आहे? का बरं दिवसाउजेडी एकही महत्वाची ट्रेन लातूरला येत नाही? घेऊया आढावा सर्व समस्यांचा.

साधारण पंधरा वर्षांपूर्वी स्व. विलासराव देशमुख यांच्या प्रयत्नाने सुरू झालेली लातूर-मुंबई सुपरफास्ट एक्स्प्रेस आजही आहे तशीच आहे. त्यात ना डब्यांची वाढ, ना फेऱ्यांची. उलट अगोदरच तुफान गर्दीने ग्रासलेल्या या गाडीला 2018 मध्ये बिदर पर्यन्त वाढवण्यात आलं. हे करत असताना लातूरकरांचा विरोध फाट्यावर मारला. नाही म्हणायला आठवड्यातले तीन दिवस बिदर-यशवंतपुर (बंगळुरू) एक्स्प्रेस लातूरपर्यंत वाढवून एक प्रकारचं साटंलोटं करण्यात आलं. पण मग लातूर एक्स्प्रेस मध्ये एसी, जनरल, स्लीपर सर्वच डबे कमी पडतात. डब्यांची संख्या किंवा गाडीची एखादी फेरी वाढवण्याची कल्पना कुणालाच का आली नसेल देव जाणे, पण लातूरकर आर्त स्वरात लातूर-मुंबई गाडीची एक फेरी दिवसा पुण्यापर्यंत करावी ही मागणी अनेक वर्षांपासून लावून आहेत.

एखाद्या स्टेशनवरून गाडी सुरू करण्यासाठी Pit Line ची रेल्वेपट्टी असावी लागते जेणेकरून रेल्वेची स्वच्छता नियमितपणे राखली जाते. लातूर स्थानकावर पिटलाईन बनवण्याची मागणी अगदी मागच्या महिन्यात मंजूर झाली. म्हणजे नवीन गाड्या सुरू करायला स्कोप आहे. रेल्वेगाड्यांसंदर्भात खालीलप्रमाणे काही मागण्या आहेत लातूरकरांच्या:

रेल्वेगाड्यांच्या मागण्या

1. लातूर – मुंबई सुपरफास्ट एक्सप्रेसचे डबे वाढवण्यात यावे व सर्व डबे LHB कोचेस चे असावे
2. लातूर – मुंबई सुपरफास्ट एक्स्प्रेस आठवड्यातले 4 दिवस लातूरमध्ये 16 तास रिकामी उभी असते. सदर काळात गाडीची एक फेरी पुण्यापर्यंत करण्यात यावी.
3. वरील मागणी शक्य नसेल तर लातूर-पुणे इंटरसिटी एक्स्प्रेस दिवसाच्या वेळी सुरू करण्यात यावी.
4. कोल्हापूर-नागपूर व हडपसर-हैदराबाद गाड्यांना डेली करण्यात यावे.
5. लातूर-छत्रपती संभाजीनगर अशी एक डेली अथवा वीकली गाडी सुरू करण्यात यावी
6. लातूरवरून दिल्ली, अहमदाबाद, चेन्नई, आग्रा, लखनऊ, वाराणसी, अजमेर, रामेश्वरम, त्रिवेंद्रम, विशाखापट्टणम इ. दूरस्थ शहरांना रेल्वेची सोय करण्यात यावी.
7. कुर्डुवाडी जंक्शन ते लातूररोड जंक्शन लोकल सुरू करण्यात यावी.
8. मिरज-परळी व पंढरपूर-निजामाबाद डेमु एक्स्प्रेसच्या वेळा बदलून दिवसा ठेवण्यात याव्यात.
9. हरंगुळ, औसारोड, मुरुड, ढोकी येथे एक्स्प्रेस गाड्यांना तर घरणी, भातांगळी येथे डेमु/पॅसेंजर गाड्यांना थांबा देण्यात यावा.
10. लातूर-नाशिकरोड मार्गे दौंड-अहमदनगर-मनमाड अशी रेल्वेदेखील सुरू करण्यात यावी.
11. भविष्यात लातूर-मुंबई वंदे भारत एक्स्प्रेस सुरू करण्यात यावी
12. धनबाद-कोल्हापूर दीक्षाभूमी एक्स्प्रेस सारख्या इतरही लांब पल्ल्याच्या गाड्या लातूरमार्गे वळवण्यात याव्यात.
13. तेजस, दुरोंतो, गरीबरथ, गतिमान, राजधानी इ. प्रकारच्या गाड्यादेखील लातूरमार्गे वळवून मोठ्या शहरांशी लातूरला जोडण्यात यावं.

स्थानक-सुसज्जतेच्या मागण्या

लातूर रेल्वेस्थानक आजही एखाद्या गावखेड्याच्या स्थानकासारखं छोट्याश्या इमारतीत आहे. हीच गत लातूररोड जंक्शन ची सुद्धा आहे. दिसायला आकर्षक असलं तरी हरंगुळ स्थानक सुद्धा असंच छोटंसं आहे, तेही केवळ एका प्लॅटफॉर्मचं. स्टेशन संदर्भात काही महत्वाच्या मागण्या

1. लातूररोड किंवा हरंगुळ स्थानकावर 4 पर्यन्त प्लॅटफॉर्म ची संख्या वाढवण्यात यावी.
2. दोन्ही स्थानकांवर सरकता जिना अर्थात एसकेलेटर आणि लिफ्ट ची व्यवस्था करण्यात यावी.
3. लातूर स्थानकावर लौंज, आहे त्यापेक्षा मोठे व सुसज्ज प्रतिक्षालाय, आहे त्यापेक्षा मोठे व स्वच्छ प्रसाधनगृह, कॅन्टीन आदि सेवा सुरू करण्यात याव्यात.
4. लातूर व लातूररोड जंक्शन च्या इमारती अद्ययावत व मोठ्या करण्यात याव्यात.
5. लातूरच्या प्लॅटफॉर्म क्रं 1 ची लांबी वाढवण्यात यावी, तसेच प्लॅटफॉर्मचे शेड्स सुद्धा वाढवण्यात यावे.
6. लातूर स्थानकावर दुसऱ्या बाजूने दादरा म्हणजेच फूट ओव्हरब्रिज बनवण्यात यावा तसेच हरंगुळ स्थानकावरही दादरा बनवण्यात यावा.
7. लातूर रेल्वेस्थानक परिसरात सुरक्षित व गार्डेड पार्किंग ची सोय करण्यात यावी.

नवीन रेल्वेमार्ग व दुहेरीकरण

लातूर-अहमदपूर-नांदेड या रेल्वेमार्गास मंजुरी मिळून अनेक वर्षे झाली तरी प्रत्यक्षात काम अजून दिसणं बाकी आहे. हीच गत सोलापूर-तुळजापूर-धाराशिव रेल्वेमार्गाचीही आहेच. काही विशिष्ट मागण्या यासंदर्भात:

1. लातूर रोड-नांदेड व सोलापूर-धाराशिव रेल्वेमार्गाचं काम तातडीनं पूर्ण करण्यात यावं.
2. लातूर-छत्रपती संभाजीनगर मार्गे केज-बीड-गेवराई अश्या नव्या रेल्वेमार्गाचं काम सर्वेक्षणात घेण्यात यावं.
3. लातूररोड-बोधन रेल्वेमार्गास लवकरात लवकर मंजुरी मिळवून देण्यात यावी.
4. लातूररोड-मिरज मार्गाचं दुहेरीकरण तात्काळ पूर्ण करण्यात यावं.
5. लातूररोड जंक्शन येथे बायपास लाईन बनवण्यात यावी.

लातूर रेल्वेस्थानकाची कनेक्टिव्हिटी

सदरील मागण्या विशेषतः लातूर मनपा व लातूर जिल्हा प्रशासनाकडे आहेत. लातूर रेल्वेस्थानक शहराच्या मध्यवर्ती भागापासून तब्बल 6 किमी दूर आहे. लातूररोड जंक्शन लातूर शहरापासून 40 तर चाकूरपासून 7 किमी अंतरावर आहे. हरंगुळ स्थानक शहरापासून साधारण 8 किमी तर लातूर रेल्वेस्थानकापासून 10 किमी अंतरावर आहे.  या सर्व ठिकाणी कनेक्टिव्हिटी सुसज्ज ठेवण्यासाठी खालीलप्रमाणे सिटी बसच्या फेरी वाढवण्यात याव्या.

1. लातूर-मुंबई प्रमाणेच कोल्हापूर-नागपूर, धनबाद-कोल्हापूर, सोलापूर-तिरुपती, नांदेड-पनवेल, हडपसर-हैदराबाद, अमरावती-पुणे या गाड्यांच्या वेळांनाही सिटी बस सोडण्यात याव्यात.
2. लातूर रोड जंक्शन पासून ते राष्ट्रीय महामार्ग क्रं 361 हा 1 किमी मार्ग अत्यन्त खराब अवस्थेत आहे. इथे सुसज्ज रस्ता बनवन्यात यावा.
3. नांदेड-बंगळुरू, छत्रपती संभाजीनगर-तिरुपती, शिर्डी-हैदराबाद, पूर्णा-हैदराबाद, छत्रपती संभाजीनगर-हैदराबाद या सर्व गाड्यांच्या वेळी लातूर ते लातूररोड जंक्शन आणि रिटर्न अश्या सिटी बसेस किंवा एसटी बसेस सोडण्यात याव्यात.
4. राष्ट्रीय महामार्ग 548B रिंग रोड ते लातूर रेल्वेस्थानक हा 1 किलोमीटर रस्ता चौपदरीकरण करून पथदिवे बसवण्यात यावेत.

मालगाडी व मालधक्का

1) लातूरच्या मालधक्क्याचे स्टेशनजवळच नवीन जागी स्थलांतरण करून सध्याच्या मालधक्क्याची जागा वाढीव प्लेटफॉर्म्स साठी वापरण्यात यावी.

2) सध्या मालधक्क्याकडे जाणारा रस्ता साई रोड मार्गे जातो व अत्यन्त दुरावस्थेत आहे. मालधक्क्यापासून ते स्टेशनरोड पर्यन्त बाह्यवळण उड्डाणपूल बांधून मालधक्क्याची वाहतूक थेट रिंगरोडला आणण्यात यावी.

3) मालधक्क्याची सुसज्ज इमारत बांधावी व भव्य शासकीय गोदाम आणि शीतगृह त्याच्याजवळच बनवण्यात यावे.

4) ईस्टर्न व वेस्टर्न डेडिकेटेड फ्रेट कॉरिडॉर प्रमाणे भविष्यातही होऊ घातलेल्या फ्रेट कॉरिडॉरच्या नकाशावर लातूरला आणण्याचा अग्रस्थानी विचार व्हावा. लातूर मधील रेल कोच फॅक्टरी, मोठ्या ऑइल मिल्स, साखर-सोयाबीन-तूर यांसारख्या पिकांचे उत्पादन व बाजारपेठ यांसारख्या सर्व महत्वाच्या गोष्टींचा विचार करता लातूरला मालगाड्यांची व भविष्यात लातूरमार्गे डेडिकेटेड फ्रेट कॉरिडॉर ची नितांत आवश्यकता आहे यात दुमत नाही.

मराठवाड्यातील इतर समस्या व मागण्या

1) परभणी-परळी-विकाराबाद रेल्वेमार्गाचे दुहेरीकरण लवकरात लवकर पूर्ण करण्यात यावे.

2) तब्बल 29 वर्षांपासून संथगतीने चाललेल्या परळी-बीड-अहमदनगर रेल्वेमार्गाचे काम तातडीने पूर्ण करून सदर मार्ग विद्युतीकरण करून घ्यावा.

3) परभणी-मनमाड रेल्वेमार्गाचे दुहेरीकरण व विद्युतीकरण तातडीने पूर्ण करण्यात यावे.

4) जालना-जळगाव व नांदेड-वर्धा रेल्वेमार्गाचे कामही तातडीने पूर्ण व्हावे.

5) संपूर्ण मराठवाड्यासाठी “मराठवाडा रेल्वे” हा स्वतंत्र रेल्वे विभाग घोषित करण्यात यावा.

6) घाटनांदूर-अंबाजोगाई-दौंड रेल्वेमार्गाचे सर्वेक्षण पूर्ण करून तातडीने मंजुरीसाठी प्रयत्न करावेत.

7) मराठवाड्यात एक स्वतंत्र रेल्वेयार्ड बनवण्यात यावे.

8) मनमाड-जालना, नांदेड-परभणी, परळी-परभणी मार्गावर लोकल सेवा सुरू करण्यात यावी (हे काम शंभर टक्के विद्युतीकरण व दुहेरीकरणाशिवाय होऊ शकत नसल्याने सध्याच्या ही तातडीची मागणी केवळ नांदेड-परभणी मार्गासाठी ग्राह्य धरण्यात येऊ शकते, मात्र उपरोक्त सर्व मार्गांवर लोकल ट्रेनची नितांत आवश्यकता आहे)

शेवटाकडे…

वरीलपैकी काही मागण्या अवाजवी किंवा अप्रात्यक्षिक वाटत असल्या तरी लातूर व मराठवाड्याच्या सर्वांगीण विकासासाठी प्रचंड गरजेच्या आहेत. या सर्व मागण्या लातूर व मराठवाड्याच्याजनतेच्या वतीने केंद्रीय रेल्वे मंत्री मा. श्री. अश्विनी वैष्णव, केंद्रीय रेल्वे राज्यमंत्री मा. श्री. रावसाहेब दानवे, महाराष्ट्र शासन व स्थानिक प्रशासनास सविनय सादर करण्यात येत आहेत. हा ब्लॉग इतका शेअर करा की शासनाला या मागण्यांची दखल घ्यावीच लागेल.
